Trusting God When Life Doesn't Make Sense

Message Summary:
Someone recently said to me, “Every time I feel like I’ve caught up, something else hits. My rent went up, groceries cost more, and now my car needs a repair I can’t afford. I’m not living beyond my means—I just don’t have enough means.” Maybe you’ve felt that way too—like you’re treading water, but the tide keeps rising. If that’s you, you’re not alone. And you’re not forgotten.
In 1 Kings 17, Elijah is doing everything right.
...But his source of provision dries up. Literally. The brook God gave him runs dry. To make matters worse, God tells him to travel into enemy territory—Jezebel’s homeland—and rely on a poor, starving widow. This woman is down to her last handful of flour and a drop of oil. She’s preparing a final meal for herself and her son. Elijah asks for water and bread and she tells him she has nothing left. But Elijah responds with a word from the Lord: “Don’t be afraid. Put God first.” And as she does, God provides.
Faith rarely makes sense in the moment. It often defies logic, stretches our comfort, and leads us into unfamiliar places—so that we can see what only God can do. The Bible is full of these moments: a widow giving her last coins, David facing a giant, Peter walking on water, Jesus dying on a cross. None of it makes sense naturally—but it makes all the sense in the world when God is involved.
Faith means trusting God enough to put Him first, even when the numbers don’t add up. Whether you have much or little, your calling is the same: obey, trust, and believe that He will provide. Just like the widow in Zarephath, you may feel like you’re at the end—but God’s just getting started.
