What Is Shaping Your Mind?

What Is Shaping Your Mind?

My brain feels tired a lot right now. Part of that is the craziness of the season right now. Multiple kids running in different directions. Leading a church. A spouse starting a new business. Vacations. Bills. Consequently, I can have a hard time shutting my brain off. You're probably right there with me.

In a world where we prioritize physical health--think protein goals, Apple Watches, step counts, PRs at the gym, calorie tracking, and sleep monitoring, we don't always ask a very needed question.

How is your mind?

Not your intelligence. Not your IQ. Your mind—the place where your thoughts are formed and your decisions are made.

The reality is that our minds are being shaped every day. All those things I mentioned at the start? What if those things aren't just on your mind, as the saying goes? What if, rather, they are actually shaping your mind? The truth is this:  You're being influenced and shaped by the things you think about. The things you allow into your life. The question isn't whether you're being influenced. The question is what is influencing you.

Psalm 1 opens with a striking contrast. One person is shaped by the counsel of the world around them. Another delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. One becomes stable and fruitful like a tree planted by streams of water. The other becomes unstable like chaff blown by the wind.

David understood something we often forget: whatever shapes your mind shapes your life.

That’s why Psalm 1 isn’t really about reading more Bible chapters. It’s about formation. The blessed person doesn’t merely read God’s Word—they delight in it.

You can read a manual without delighting in it. You can read instructions without loving them. You can even read Scripture without growing closer to God. But God’s desire has always been relationship, not mere information.

This is exactly what we see in Deuteronomy 6. God’s people were instructed to speak His truth throughout the rhythms of everyday life—when they woke up, when they traveled, when they sat together, and before they went to sleep. The goal wasn’t simply memorization. The goal was transformation.

The same remains true today.

When we open God’s Word, we aren’t simply gathering facts. We are learning to recognize His voice. We are allowing His truth to shape our perspective, challenge our assumptions, and redirect our desires.

Over time, something powerful happens.

God’s Word shapes your mind. Your mind shapes your decisions. And your decisions shape your life.

The deepest purpose of Scripture is not information but relationship. As we delight in God’s Word, we learn to delight in the God it reveals.

So back to the original question--What is shaping your mind today? To be more specific--Are you allowing God's word to regularly shape your mind? Are you engaging with scripture and allowing your life to be shaped by what God says?

Because what shapes your mind will eventually shape your life.

Do you need a summer bible reading plan to help you create a rhythm of reading the scriptures? It's free. It's simple. And it will help shape your mind.
