When Pride Becomes Your Downfall

When Pride Becomes Your Downfall

Pride is sneaky. It doesn’t always look like arrogance—it can look like self-reliance, control, or even quiet independence. At its core, pride is putting confidence in oneself instead of God. But sooner or later, it will cost you. Look no further than attempting to bring in all the groceries in one trip. Lifting the piece of furniture by yourself. Or carrying the coffee with your hands and arms full of other things. It rarely works out well, does it?

Pride will always trip you up.

The story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 is often told as an underdog story, but there’s more here than meets the eye. Goliath stood tall, armored, and full of confidence. He had every reason to trust his size and strength. Yet with one stone, he fell. David, meanwhile, had no earthly advantage. But his confidence wasn’t in himself—it was in the Lord Almighty.

That’s the contrast. Goliath shouted, “Look at me.” David declared, “Look at God.”

If we're honest, many times our lives whisper, shout, and speak to the world "look at me." In fact, when we read the story of David slaying Goliath, we imagine ourselves as David, the hero of the story. We dream of slaying our own giants, the trophy, the accolades, the money and fame--we long for glory.

But David longed for God to receive glory.

And that's the key difference: we are not David in this story. We are more like Goliath, puffed up with confidence in ourselves. And just like Goliath, pride always leads to a fall. Thankfully, we aren't the hero of our story. You weren't designed to carry that kind of weight. That burden. That pressure. But there is another.

Jesus is the Champion who stepped onto the battlefield and defeated the ultimate giant: sin and death.

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus secured the victory we could never win on our own. Our role is not to boast in our strength, but to share in His victory.

The giant of pride collapses when we recognize we can’t save ourselves. The true victory is found only in Christ.
