{Summary Transcript}

“I talked to someone recently who said, ‘Every time I feel like I’ve caught up, something else hits—my rent went up, groceries cost more, and my car needs a repair I can’t afford. I’m not living beyond my means. I just don’t have enough means.’”

Maybe you’ve felt that too—like you’re treading water financially, but the tide keeps rising. You’re not alone. And you’re not forgotten. Scripture speaks right into that place.

Text: 1 Kings 17:7–16

Elijah is in a tough season. He’s doing everything right—faithfully obeying God—but even his provision runs out. The brook dries up. Ever been there? “God, I’m doing my best—why does it feel like even the little I had is gone?”

God then tells Elijah to go to Zarephath—in enemy territory—and rely on a poor, starving widow for provision. Not exactly the plan we would expect. But that’s the point:

Faith rarely makes sense to our natural senses.

This widow is preparing her last meal. She’s out of options. Elijah says, “Don’t be afraid. Do what you planned—but put God first.” That doesn’t make sense. But she obeys. And as she does—God provides. Her flour doesn’t run out. Her oil doesn’t run dry.

Theme: Faith That Doesn’t Make Sense

Faith is not obedience when everything makes sense.

Faith is obedience even when it doesn’t make sense.

Faith often looks like:

  • Obeying when the numbers don’t add up.

  • Giving when you’re barely getting by.

  • Trusting when all you see is lack.

“Faith will defy logic, challenge comfort, and lead you into places you wouldn’t choose—so that you can see what only God can do.”

Jesus and the Widow (Mark 12:41–44)

Jesus praises a poor widow for giving all she had. We’d have stopped her. Advised her to keep it. But Jesus honors her faith—not her amount.

The question isn’t how much you have. The question is who you trust.

For the Poor and the Rich

  • The poor may give less, but their faith may be greater.

  • The rich may give more, but without faith, it’s rejected (see Cain and Abel).

Everyone is called to trust God as Provider, not self.

Faith Stories that Didn’t Make Sense:

  • Abraham leaves his homeland.

  • Noah builds a boat before it rains.

  • David faces a giant with a sling.

  • Ruth follows Naomi into poverty.

  • Peter walks on water.

  • Mary believes an angel.

  • Jesus dies… to win.

The Cross Doesn’t Make Sense

Jesus’ death looked like defeat—but it was victory.

That’s what faith looks like: trusting even when it doesn’t make sense. Jesus obeyed the Father fully, and now we follow in his footsteps. This is how we build a life that lasts.

Faith chooses to obey God by putting Him first—even when it doesn’t make sense.
